Im Jahr 2004 veröffentlichte Green Day ihr siebtes Studioalbum »American Idiot«. Produziert von Rob Cavallo, war American Idiot ein Konzeptalbum, das zu einem der am höchsten gelobten und kommerziell erfolgreichsten Alben von Green Day wurde und in mehreren Ländern die Charts anführte, darunter in den USA, Großbritannien, Kanada und Australien.
Das Album enthält auch die Singles »American Idiot«, »Jesus of Suburbia«, »Holiday«, »Wake Me Up When September Ends« und »Boulevard of Broken Dreams«, das 2006 mit dem Grammy Award für die beste Platte des Jahres ausgezeichnet wurde.
