30 Jahre sind vergangen, seit Metallica ihr Album »Metallica«, auch bekannt als »The Black Album«, veröffentlichten.
Zum Jubiläum dieses Heavy-Metal-Meilensteins legt die Band das Album 2021 noch einmal auf. Aber das ist noch längst nicht alles. Neben einer remasterten CD und Doppel-LP gibt es eine drei CD-Box und eine Limited Super Deluxe Box.
»Metallica« erschien ursprünglich am 12. August 1991. Es ist das fünfte Album der US-amerikanischen Heavy-Metal-Band. Den Beinamen »The Black Album« erhielt es aufgrund seines schlichten und nahezu komplett schwarzen Cover-Artworks.
Die Platte umfasst insgesamt zwölf Lieder, die Metallica zusammen mit dem kanadischen Produzenten Bob Rock bei »One on One Recording« in Los Angeles, Kalifornien aufnahmen. Diese Zusammenarbeit sollte ein neues Kapitel in ihrem Schaffen bedeuten. Statt langer, progressiver Songs schrieben James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich und Jason Newsted nun kürzere, einfachere, aber dafür eingängigere Songs. Dazu gehören auch die fünf Singles »Enter Sandman«, »The Unforgiven«, »Nothing Else Matters«, »Wherever I May Roam« und »Sad But True«.
Der Erfolg ihres musikalischen Umdenkens ließ nicht lange auf sich warten: »Metallica« landete in zehn Ländern auf Platz eins der Charts, darunter die USA, Großbritannien und Deutschland. In Deutschland blieb es ganze 150 Wochen in den Albumcharts. Mit weltweit mehr als 28 Millionen verkauften Exemplaren ist es zudem das meistverkaufte Metal-Album aller Zeiten.
Das remasterte Album erscheint im September 2021 als CD und Doppel-LP sowie als 3-CDs-Box mit dem Album, einer »Demos & Roughs«-CD und der 13-Track-Live Compilation »Wherever We May Roam«. Das absolute Highlight der Jubiläumseditionen ist jedoch die Limited Super Deluxe Box mit sechs LPs, 14 CDs und sechs DVDs sowie zahlreichen weiteren Extras, darunter ein 120-seitiges Hardcoverbuch.
Und, als wäre das nicht schon genug Grund zur Freude, präsentieren Metallica am 1. Oktober 2021 noch ein weiteres Album zur Feier ihres »Black Album«, und zwar das »The Metallica Blacklist«-Coveralbum. Dafür haben sich 53 verschiedene Künstler jeweils einen Song des Albums vorgenommen und ihm eine völlig neue, eigene Interpretation verpasst. Mit dabei sind Stars wie Elton John, Miley Cyrus oder Chad Smith von den Red Hot Chili Peppers. Alle Einnahmen, die Metallica durch die Albumverkäufe von »The Metallica Blacklist« erzielen, spenden sie und die mitwirkenden Künstler zu gleichen Teilen an Metallicas eigene Foundation »All Within My Hands« und je eine gemeinnützige Institution der Wahl.
Beide Metallica-Releases erscheinen auf dem bandeigenen Label »Blackened Recordings«.
